Keeping Cream Fresher

I have another money saving tip to share!


I am a big fan of the Cream and Half 'n Half that is sold in 1/2 gallon cartons at Costco. It's a huge money saver. However, I rarely was able to get through a whole carton before it spoiled. Unless I was doing a lot of cooking, or making several desserts, I would be tossing out the remnants of most cartons, both of cream and the half 'n half.

Well, not anymore! About 2 months ago, I found these DARLING glass milk bottles at World Market. I snagged one up just because it was so cute and matched my kitchen, but went back 2 days later when I had an epiphany that they could REALLY be put to use.

And that's when the transfer of cream to glass bottles began.

I'm sure that many of you have read my post for keeping Strawberries fresh. This is the same idea! I also do this, as I mentioned before, with my lettuce and some of my other produce.

When you think about it, glass is a better way to block out  the oxygen and odors that would otherwise permeate into food. That's why we use glass jars to can food, right? Anyway...I just wanted to share this little tip. If I get my cream into these cartons as soon as I bring it home, I get at least 10 more days use of it than if I'd left it in the cardboard carton it came in. NO kidding.

By the way, these are Quart size bottles. I do have a smaller half quart one with the same design that I found at Home Goods. But with 2 of the Quart size, I can empty the entire carton into them. If you can't find this type of bottle, any glass jar or bottle will work, provided you have a tight-sealing lid!

I keep one bottle near the front of my beverage shelf, and the other one way in the back at the coldest part of the fridge. When one is emptied, I put it in the dishwasher to clean it, and then store it in my pantry until I fill up again. By the way, if you squeeze together the clasp that holds the ceramic lid on, you can remove it for cleaning upside down in the dishwasher.

I feel VERY French when I pull my "Le Bon Lait" bottle out of the fridge to add some cream to whatever I am making. C'est Magnifique!

Ha...I have one of those bottles sitting on my counter. Right now it's just taking up space. :)
I should put it to use like this!
I know keeping mushrooms and other tender things in glass containers is supposed to help them keep longer. Now maybe I'll buy those bigger cartons of cream.

You're sure welcome Kelly! I use bottles for just about everything these days, and I've been buying new small pint size ones to use for sauces and things that I would previously have put into rubbermaid containers. Not only do they look prettier, but I can tell what they are at at a glance easier! Try it with berries and lettuce too...it's amazing.

I just said to my husband this morning, "This half gallon cream is a little ungainly when I first open it - I wish I had something smaller to put it in." Now I can solve that problem, and keep it fresher! thanks a bunch!
