Spring Cleaning Checklist: Room by Room

Spring is the perfect time to reset your home after months of closed windows, muddy boots, and indoor clutter. Instead of staring at the whole house and feeling overwhelmed, work through it one room at a time with a clear plan. This room-by-room spring cleaning checklist will help you refresh every corner of your home without losing an entire weekend to the effort.

Start With a Plan and Your Supplies

Before you touch a duster, take ten minutes to map out your approach. Decide which rooms you'll tackle on which days, and gather everything you need so you don't stop mid-task to hunt for supplies.

  • All-purpose cleaner and glass cleaner
  • Microfiber cloths and paper towels
  • A vacuum with attachments and a mop
  • Rubber gloves and a scrub brush
  • Trash bags and boxes for donations
  • Baking soda and white vinegar for gentle, budget-friendly cleaning

Work from top to bottom in every room — dust and cobwebs fall, so cleaning ceilings and shelves first means you won't have to redo your floors.

Kitchen: Clear Surfaces and Hidden Crumbs

The kitchen works hard all year, so give it extra attention. Empty the refrigerator and wipe down every shelf, tossing expired items as you go. Pull out appliances if you can and vacuum or sweep underneath, where crumbs and dust love to hide. Run an empty cycle through the dishwasher and give the sink, faucet, and drain a thorough scrub. Don't forget cabinet fronts, light switches, and the inside of the microwave — these spots collect grime you stop noticing over time.

A Quick Decluttering Win

While you're cleaning, take five minutes to declutter one drawer or cabinet. Donate the duplicate spatula, the mismatched containers without lids, and the gadgets you never use. A freshly cleaned space feels twice as good when it's also lighter on stuff.

Living Room: Refresh Where You Relax

Start high: dust ceiling fan blades, light fixtures, and the tops of picture frames. Vacuum upholstered furniture, including under the cushions, and wash throw blankets and pillow covers if the care labels allow. Wipe down electronics and remote controls, clean windows and sills, and sweep or vacuum under the sofa and coffee table. If you have houseplants, wipe dust off their leaves — they'll thank you with better growth.

Bedrooms: Deep Clean and Air Out

Strip the beds and wash all bedding, including mattress protectors and pillow covers. While the mattress is bare, vacuum its surface and rotate or flip it if the manufacturer recommends it. Dust nightstands, lamps, and baseboards, then tackle the closet:

  1. Pull out anything you haven't worn in the past year
  2. Sort items into keep, donate, and repair piles
  3. Return like items together so your closet stays organized

Open the windows for a while if the weather allows — fresh air makes bedrooms feel instantly cleaner.

Bathroom: Scrub the Forgotten Spots

Bathrooms need the deepest scrub. Clean the toilet inside and out, descale the showerhead if you notice buildup, and wash or replace the shower curtain liner. Clear out the medicine cabinet and dispose of anything expired according to your local guidelines. Wash bath mats, wipe down the exhaust fan cover, and polish mirrors and fixtures until they shine.

Finish Strong: Entryway and Floors

Finally, give your entryway a reset, since it collects the most dirt. Shake out doormats, organize shoes and coats, and wipe down the door and handles. Then clean all floors throughout the house — vacuum carpets, mop hard surfaces, and consider spot-treating any stains you've been ignoring.

Once every room is done, take a moment to enjoy the result. A clean, refreshed home sets the tone for the whole season, and with this checklist, spring cleaning becomes a series of small, satisfying wins rather than one daunting chore.
